Ventura Surf Forecast - for Monday - 2/1/2010

Make sure to read the full region forecast it has more complete details on the incoming swell and regional conditions. Click here for the full forecast www.socalsurf.com.

WNW-NW swell will be on the way down on Monday but there should still be enough to get out and ride on the lower tides. Look for the average breaks to be in the knee-waist high range while the standout NW spots, mostly through South County, will have some chest-shoulder high sets. Less size and consistency overall so you might want to bring a board that will work better in these sort of conditions.

Winds will be light ESE through the morning, and then light W around 10 knots for the afternoon…so it should stay fairly surfable throughout the day.

Ventura Surf Forecast - Weekend Waves - 1/30-1/31/2010

Make sure to read the full region forecast it has more complete details on the incoming swell and regional conditions. Click here for the full forecast www.socalsurf.com.

WNW-NW swell peaks on Saturday and holds into Sunday. Unfortunately both days are going to have morning tide issues thanks to the high-tides that peak right around 8:30-9:30am. Spots that can handle the tide will see some shoulder-overhead surf with sets going overhead+ at times.

As the tide drops, both and Saturday and Sunday, look for the average WNW facing breaks to see consistent head high and overhead surf with sets going 2-3’+ overhead. Shape looks best at the points and reefs but if you have a secret little sandbar it might be worth a look as the tide starts to drain out.

Winds look a little funky on Saturday…sort of variable onshore through mid-morning and then more steadily onshore for the afternoon. Sunday looks much cleaner with offshore flow in the morning and only variable onshore bump setting up later in the afternoon.

Here are the tides…have a good weekend!

6.8’ high tide hitting at 8am pretty much hoses us…there will be some playful WNW-NW swell in the water but it is going to have a hard time pushing through the extra water. Once the tide drops look for most spots to be in the waist-chest high range with some shoulder high sets showing at the standouts. More WNW-NW swell (280-300) begins to fill in through the end of the day…probably getting pretty fun on the afternoon tide push (if the winds hold off)…I wouldn’t be surprised to see some head high+ sets showing before sunset.

Light and variable to light offshore winds for the morning. WNW-NW winds around 10-15 knots expected for the afternoon…possibly lightening up around sundown.

Overall surf size backs down on Thursday but there will still be enough WNW-NW swell in the water to find a few rideable sections. There is a new little S-SSW swell that will sneak into parts of South County…so expect a few more crossed up peaks forming at the well exposed combo spots, particularly at the beach breaks. High tide swamps us in the morning so you might want to wait for it to back off.

Light and variable to light offshore winds for the morning. Light winds, variable below 10-knots, will be on tap through midafternoon and then may back down a bit around sundown.

WNW swell will be slowly dropping by Wednesday morning, but there will still be some fun waves at the exposed spots. Look for mostly chest-shoulder high surf at the average W facing spots. Top breaks, particularly spots that like the higher tides, will have some shoulder-head high surf with some inconsistent overhead sets at times. With the swell backing down look for less consistency and less size by the afternoon.

Light and variable winds on tap for the morning with a little bit of onshore bump here and there. Look for building W-NW winds around 10-15 knots for the afternoon.

Another decent sized WNW swell moves in on Tuesday. Average W facing spots move back into the shoulder-overhead range while the standout NW breaks see consistent head high to a few feet overhead on the bigger sets. Shape will be a little slow through the morning…but it should improve through midmorning as the tide drops. Not sure how long the winds will hold through the morning either…you might want to weigh the tide vs the wind at some point just so you don’t miss out.

Winds will be out of the E-ESE through the morning…lots of spots seeing 10-15+ knots but with some stronger 20+ knot gusts at times. Expect rain and cool air temps as well. Look for winds to shift more to the straight S by later in the day…so junky conditions in many areas by the afternoon.

Fading but still fun W-WNW swell will be on tap for Monday. Look for most exposed spots to hold around shoulder-head high…with some occasional overhead sets still sneaking into a few of the better spots. Standout WNW-NW breaks, mostly through the south half of the county, will be in the shoulder-overhead range with some sets still coming in a couple of feet overhead at times.

Winds look good for the morning but switch onshore out of the W-WNW around 10-15+ knots for the afternoon. Expect increasing cloudiness throughout the day…with a chance at some more rain/showers moving in on Tuesday.

Saturday will be a bit jumbled up and will see a little more onshore wind than other areas…winds funneling through the East Santa Barbara channel seem to pour on the energy a bit in the morning. Look for plenty of well-overhead surf and poor water quality. Top spots will see some sets going several feet overhead and probably bigger as the swell holds through the morning.

Sunday will be cleaner and a bit smaller. Most breaks will have shoulder to overhead+ surf while the standout WNW-NW facing spots still see sets going a couple of feet+ overhead at times. Winds will be light offshore for the morning and mostly light and variable through the afternoon.

W-WNW swell will peak on Friday…though conditions don’t look particularly appetizing. Granted a lot is going to depend on how fast this last storm front moves through the area but at this point it looks like SW winds around 15-20 knots and more rain on tap for the morning. The winds eventually shift more W’erly by the afternoon but that won’t really help things that much. If the front stalls out we could see more SE flow in the morning which could at least set up some potential for cleaner surf at a handful of protected breaks.

Look for average exposed breaks to hold consistently overhead to well-overhead. The WNW-NW facing standouts will see some well-overhead to double-triple overhead sizes as well as some inconsistently bigger sets at times.

Overall don’t expect much in the way of surfable shape, even at the very protected areas…but if you are willing to brave the poor water quality, and potentially hazardous surf, you might spend a few minutes checking out spots that can handle the mix of wind/weather/swell.

More storm and more swell continue to pummel us on Thursday. W-WNW swell and junky stormswell will hit exposed areas pretty hard…continuing to push in large sloppy surf and poor conditions. Wave heights fill in a bit more…but overall will be very similar to Wednesday. Look for average exposed breaks to hold consistently overhead to well-overhead. The WNW-NW facing standouts will see some well-overhead to double-triple overhead sizes as well as some inconsistently bigger sets at times.

S winds, possibly even some SSE winds at times, and rain will be on tap for Thursday…look for winds around 15-25+ knots with gusts around 35-40 knots. Severe weather warnings, flash flood warnings, and all sorts of fun stuff will likely continue to be in effect throughout the day…fortunately it looks like the weather will start to break by the weekend. More stormy conditions and more W-WNW swell on tap for Wednesday. Lots of juice coming through at the well exposed breaks.

Wave heights will be running pretty consistently overhead to well-overhead as the WNW swell peaks through the morning. WNW-NW facing standouts will see some well-overhead to double overhead sizes through the morning and some inconsistently bigger sets helping to keep things interesting throughout the day. Who knows maybe the Ventura Pier will get knocked down again.

Look for SE winds around 15-25+ knots for the morning, along with stronger gusts at the well exposed spots. Rain on tap for the morning as well. S-SSW winds will shift through in the afternoon building into 15-25+ knot range with stronger near 35+ knot gusts as the storm settles in. More rain and a chance for Thunderstorms for the evening/night as well.

New W swell and more craptacular weather will be on tap for Tuesday. Look for a new cold front to spin around the wind to the SE…cleaning up a few spots (that usually work well on storm-swells)…but hacking up a lot of others.

Wave heights will be running pretty consistently overhead as the new swell fills in…WNW facing standouts will see some overhead to well-overhead sizes through the morning and probably more size on tap through the lower tide in the afternoon. Overall I am not expecting very surfable shape but there may be a few of the really protected breaks that will have some marginal but rideable waves, particularly through the morning.

Look for SE winds around 10-15+ knots for the morning, along with stronger gusts at the well exposed spots. Rain on tap for the morning as well. S-SSW winds will shift through in the afternoon building into 15-25+ knot range with stronger near 35+ knot gusts as the storm settles in. The W-WNW swell mix (275-300) will hold into Saturday and then mix with a new WNW pulse (280-300) that arrives on Sunday…both are coming in from pretty good directions for Ventura so expect waves showing at pretty much all of the usual winter standouts.

Sizewise we can expect surf in the shoulder-head high range with inconsistent overhead sets at the average WNW facing spots. Top WNW-NW spots will be running in the shoulder-overhead range with inconsistent sets going a couple of feet+ overhead on the lower tides.

Look for clean conditions with E winds around 10-15+ knots for the morning and some gusts near 20+ knots near passes and canyons. It will be pretty chilly in the morning but hopefully it will warm up through the middle of the day. Look for light and variable winds through the afternoon…likely keeping things pretty surfable throughout the day.

Weatherwise look for light and variable winds through early Saturday and only marginal onshore flow for the afternoon. Sunday will start out with light/variable winds as well but S-SSE winds and increasingly cloudy skies will move in through the afternoon. Rain will be coming as well but it looks like heavy stuff will start after sundown.

The swell will be fading on Friday but the leftovers will still have plenty of size. Look for most spots to hold around the shoulder-head high+ range with sets going a couple of feet overhead at times. The standout South County breaks will be more in the head high to overhead+ range pretty consistently with some bigger waves going a few feet overhead on the best sets. Points and reefs will have the best shape…but the morning tide may make them a little funky at times.

Look for clean conditions with E winds around 10-15+ knots for the morning and some gusts near 20+ knots near passes and canyons. It will be pretty chilly in the morning but hopefully it will warm up through the middle of the day. The hits just keep on coming on Thursday…the W-WNW swell will be hitting its peak and will continue to send in solid surf. Unfortunately the morning winds and fat morning tide don’t do us any favors. NW winds around 10-15+ knots will be on tap early, even some stronger gusts at times. This will stay pretty steady through the afternoon…but start to lighten up by sundown.

Wavewise we can still expect overhead to well overhead showing at the average spots throughout the county. The better WNW facing breaks will be running a few feet+ overhead on the bigger sets and the standout WNW-NW facing breaks will be hitting double-overhead (and bigger) at times. Points and reefs that can handle that much energy and the extra water from the tide will be the best call…you will also want to stick to spots that can handle the steady NW winds (if you can find any).

The winds are set to improve by the end of the day…gradually shifting to the N or even NNE by the evening, so keep an eye on conditions…there is a chance for some clean-up around sunset. Hope you guys get a few…stay safe!

Solid surf on tap for the morning…most spots will be in the overhead to a few feet overhead range, even with the higher tide. The standout WNW-NW facing breaks will be well-overhead on most of the sets…and there will be some bigger double-overhead (+?) bombs mixing in as the tide starts to drop through the afternoon. Points/reefs that can handle the swell will have the best shape…expect the beach breaks to be a bit of a mess.

Light and variable to slightly offshore/sideshore winds set up clean conditions for the morning. Some scattered drizzle and WNW-NW winds around 10-15 knots move in through the afternoon.

The surf fades slightly on Tuesday but there will continue to be plenty of good-sized waves throughout the county (it is smaller than Sunday/Monday but not “small”). Expect the average spots to see surf in the chest-head high range. Standout breaks will be in the shoulder-overhead range with some sets still going a couple of feet overhead at times. The points and reefs will continue to have the best shape…beach breaks will be pretty closed out.

Winds look good for the morning, mostly light and variable to light offshore for most spots. NW-NNW winds move in later in the day but stay around the manageable 8-10 knot range.

Ventura Surf Forecast - For Monday - 1/11/10

Plenty of swell sticking around as we head into Monday, though energy and the swell periods will be coming down just a touch in the morning. Most spots will continue to pull in shoulder-overhead surf. Top spots, particularly those in the more-exposed South County, will see consistent head high to overhead+ surf with some occasional waves going a couple feet+ overhead on the biggest sets. The tide will be pretty fat (not with the ph) in the am…so try and pick breaks that can handle a lot of water, and will improve as the tide drops. Points and reefs will continue to offer up the best shape but you might be able to find a fun sandbar if you are not into surfing in a crowded lineup.

Winds look good with light offshore flow on tap for the morning…maybe even moderately offshore near some of the passes and canyons. Look for the winds to increase and shift a little more onshore through the afternoon before possibly laying down again near the sunset.

Ventura Surf Forecast - Waves for the weekend - 1/09-1/10/10

This will be a good-sized W-WNW swell that hits over the weekend...and it comes in with decent swell-periods and a great swell-direction for a lot of the breaks in Ventura. There is enough juice that some of the more fickle spots will probably be working, so you might want to hunt around a bit if you can’t handle the crowd at the more popular breaks.

Sizewise on Saturday look for most of the average spots to hold in the shoulder-overhead range with some overhead+ sets mixing in at times. The standout breaks, particularly through the south half of the county, will see consistent overhead surf with sets going several feet overhead (maybe a touch bigger at breaks that can focus the swell).

Sunday will be bigger than Saturday…average spots with W-WNW exposure will see head high surf with sets going 2-3’ overhead at times. The standout breaks will be consistently in the overhead+ to well overhead range…with some double-overhead sets on the better parts of the tide swing.

Winds look good for both days…light/moderate offshore E winds for the mornings and mostly variable slightly side/onshore for the afternoons. Some of the more protected spots may stay close to clean throughout the day. Look for the morning offshore flow to back down slightly on Sunday.

Definitely some new waves coming through in the morning…the swell will be showing a bit more up this way thanks to the county being a little further west than the counties further south. I expect the average spots to be running in the chest-head high range pretty consistently through the morning, particularly after the tide drops down a bit from the pre-dawn high tide. The top WNW-NW spots, mostly through the South Half of the county, will be in the shoulder-overhead range with some sets going a couple of feet overhead by the afternoon. Points/Reefs will have the best shape…but some of the beach breaks that have something to break up the swell might be worth a look if you can’t handle the point-break crowds.

Winds look good…E around 10-15 knots for the morning and then downshifting a couple of notches but staying sort of variable (even variable offshore/sideshore) for the afternoon. Looks like a really good chance that it will stay pretty clean and surfable throughout the day.

The surf will start to pick up through the county in the morning, nothing all that big early in the day, but getting consistently larger as we move throughout the day. For the dawn patrol expect most spots to be in the waist-chest high range with a few chest high+ sets showing inconsistently at the better WNW spots. Standout breaks will be in the chest-shoulder high range on the sets. By the afternoon most breaks will be pretty consistent in the chest-shoulder high range while the best WNW-NW spots (the ones that like long-period energy) will see some head high+ sets starting to sneak through.

Winds look good for the morning…moderate offshore out of the ENE in the 10-15 knot range. Look for WNW winds around 10-15+ knots for the afternoon…getting a little breezy at the more wide open spots with no protection.

Playful softies continue to roll in on Wednesday. The WNW swell will be a bit more consistent and the tide a bit lower through the early morning, which is looking like your best bet surfwise. Average spots will be holding around knee-waist high…with some waist high+ sets sneaking in at times. The top WNW-NW spots will be a little bigger, mostly waist-chest high with a couple bigger waves now and then. Points and reefs will be rideable…but I think the shallow beach breaks that like the higher tides might be a bit better.

Winds look good…mostly light to moderately offshore in the morning blowing out of the E around 10-15 knots. Look for those winds to shift more Northerly and stick around the 10-15 knot range for the afternoon.

It will be a surf day in Ventura on Tuesday…the new WNW pulse will be filling in and it looks like the direction is pretty decent for most of the county. Expect the average breaks to hold around waist-chest high while the top WNW-NW spots, mostly through the south half of the county, will see some chest-shoulder high sets…maybe even a few bigger waves on the lower tides. Shape will probably be the best at the points/reefs, but the size is small enough that the beach breaks will still be working.

There is still a lot of W-WNW-NW energy pushing through…despite the overall drop in swell activity…enough to keep the average spots in the waist-chest high+ range and some shoulder-head high sets showing at the exposed spots down in Southern Ventura. Points and reefs will continue to have the best shape but will be both smaller and less consistent than the more exposed beach breaks.

Winds will be light/moderate offshore out of the E-NE around 10-15 knots and conditions look like they will hold together for most of the day…and even when they start to switch it shouldn’t blow bad enough to junk out the more protected areas.

Here are the Ventura Tides…
